Invest Bristol and Bath are pleased to be sponsoring Watershed’s Playable City Award, which is returning for its fourth year and is a great example of the high-tech and creative industries collaborating in the region.
The challenge is to produce an original piece of work that uses creative technology to engage with the notion of cities as playable, malleable, and idiosyncratic public spaces, which responds to the theme ‘Journeys’. With more than half the world’s population now living in cities, transport infrastructure is a key investment area of the smart city, with communication networks joining up sensors to connect services and make efficiencies. But how people feel about their journeys, how they use their time and how they connect with others is often overlooked. A Playable City approach to urban journeying re-appropriates infrastructure and technology to start new conversations, imagine new futures and make human connections across the city. The winning proposal will be prototyped and publicly tested in Bristol, UK for the public to play in early 2017, with a view to an international tour in 2018 and beyond. The Award includes:
- Award of £30,000
- Practical support in producing the work
- Connection with the Pervasive Media Studio at Watershed in Bristol
- Development of touring and future opportunities
- Documentation of the work
