The South West Aerospace sector will be exhibiting at Paris Air Show from the 19th – 23rd June 2017.
As a sector, Aerospace and Advanced Engineering in the UK South West is worth over £7 billion. We are at the forefront of innovative product development and new technology, making this an ideal location for businesses, both new and established.
Within the UK, the South West region has the most capable aerospace sector and one of the most diverse advanced manufacturing sectors in the country. Our extensive network of highly-skilled people and innovative suppliers mean the UK South West is the obvious choice for industry giants such as Airbus, Leonardo, Boeing and Rolls Royce – to name just a few.
We can boast that the 15 world-leading aerospace companies all have bases in the UK South West. The region also offers specialist expertise across essential core areas, including: Wing Design, Engines, Landing Gear, Metrology, Avionics and Rotor, plus leading technologies such as: Composites; Robotics; Autonomous Systems; UAS and Additive Layer Manufacturing. This results in world class innovation and collaboration across many areas of Aerospace technology. Together with leading talent and extensive supply chains, the UK South West really is Europe’s aerospace powerhouse.
The UK South West also boasts a wide range of specialist innovation hubs with excellent, and growing, reputations both in the UK and abroad.
A prime example is the National Composites Centre (NCC) based at the leading Bristol & Bath Science Park. The NCC is part of the UK Composites Strategy and one of seven High Value Manufacturing Catapult Innovation Centres across the UK. The centre brings together business and academia to develop new composite design and rapid manufacture technologies, providing a gateway to the best talent and facilities in the country. The NCC also offers associated companies access to funding and an invaluable communications link with central government.
In addition to the work the sector is undertaking, the universities in the South West are contributing to future innovations and supporting R&D through many of their specialist centres:
- University of Bristol – Academic Centre for Excellence in Cyber Security;
- University of the West of England – Bristol Robotics Lab;
- University of Exeter – The Centre for Additive Layer Manufacturing (CALM);
- University of Plymouth – The Electron Microscope Centre.
The South West also has ambitions in completely new markets, including civil unmanned air vehicles and systems as well as satellite applications and spaceflight. Many leading companies, including Rolls Royce, Cobham and Thales, have interests in autonomy and robotics, with the Bristol Robotics Laboratory being an internationally-recognised research facility in its field. Newquay International Airport has been shortlisted as the potential location for the UK’s first Spaceport and the UK’s Satellite Applications Catapult has established a Centre of Excellence at Goonhilly Earth Station, in partnership with the University of Exeter. All of which demonstrate the attractive innovation environment that exists here in the South West for aerospace companies.
