Bristol & Bath’s key industry strengths are based on an excellent talent pool. We have a 700,000 strong workforce, the most skilled of any English city region and the highest percentage of workers educated to at degree level in the UK.
We have 68,000 people working in technology fields with 31,000 focusing on software, 27,000 on tech software and 10,000 in hardware.
The talent base in Bristol & Bath has historically been anchored by the region’s four leading universities and a series of major corporates including:

Complementing our major corporates is a thriving start-up scene; Bristol & Bath has the highest number of new business start-ups in the UK after London, seeing a 22.8% increase (or 4,510) in the last 10 years (Centre for Cities, Cities Outlook Report, 2015).
This rich mix of established corporates and high growth start-ups creates a healthy environment for students to remain after graduating. In advanced engineering, high tech and creative & digital sectors 42% have moved into employment in the area which contributes to the region’s reputation as being the strongest area for patents with 8.3 per 100,000 population, almost double the UK average (GVA Core City Report 2014).
In Bristol & Bath, more people are employed in knowledge based intensive businesses than Oxford and Cambridge combined (ONS).
Bristol & Bath is the largest cluster for tech and digital employment in the UK outside of London with particular strengths in software development, data management and analytics (TechNation 2015)
The University of Bristol is ranked 29th in the world and 8th in the UK (QS World Rankings 2014).
